PARADOX OF PLASTIC PACKAGING

Most people incorrectly have a negative perception on plastics, polymers made from fossil fuels like oil, gas, coals,... regarding their environmental impact. Plastics, compared to traditional materials, contribute in a significant way to energy savings and reduction of the emissions of greenhouse gases. Further energy savings and protection of the environment are for sure the future trends in plastic industry. There is a increased demand for innovative and energy saving technologies, renewable and recy-clable materials for production and product improvements. This results in green plastics and the implementation of the 3R holistic approach: reduce, reuse and recycle. Even with no more oil
resources, a future without plastics is inconceivable.

There are 2 ways to foresee plastics in the future, without oils resources: recycling of plastics and the usage of bio-plastics, bio-polymers made from renewable raw materials such as corn, wheat, potatoes...

Bio-plastics are today no comprehensive solution for reducing plastic waste stocks. Bio-plastics deteriorate only in a special composting unit, which is not the case in many countries. Furthermore, in case of recycling each type of bio-plastic would need to be collected separately. Last but not least, bio-plastics are far more expensive than traditional plastics. For example, a bio-plastic PLA (polylactic acid) is twice as expensive as PET (polyethylene terephtalate).

Today, we advice the following regarding plastic packaging:

  • 1. right plastic for the required application
  • 2. minimal weight but still functional
  • 3. highest percentage recycled content

That’s why today there is a big demand for food approved rPet (recycled polyethylene terephtalate), made from industrial and consumer PET waste. For microwavable applications we advise the food
approved PP (polypropylene).
